The Napavine Go-Getters 4-H Club was organized in 1974 by Jim Hopman. He had been in 4-H as a child and wanted to have a club in Napavine. He started the club with the help of two other leaders. Jim raised swine, so he was the Swine Leader of the club and Barbara Miller, who was his next door neighbor, was the Sheep Leader. He also recruited Jerry Owens to be the Beef Leader. During the years since the club started, the leadership has changed several times. In the early 1980’s Jim moved to Onalaska and turned the club over to Jerry and Eileen Owens, who are still the club’s main leaders.
The main focus of the club has been large animals however we do have members who participate in many other activities during the year. Some of the members do sewing and cooking projects, arts and crafts and woodworking, to name a few.
Members of the club have made it a high priority to do Community Service projects. Every year we pick several different projects to do. One of the main projects is a “play Day” for the 4-H kids on the last day of the fair. During the fair, the kids who show animals are busy with our projects and don’t get time to participate in any of the fun and games of the fair. The Go-Getters Club came up with the idea of a Play Day so we could have fun after a hard week of showing. We plan the games and buy the gifts for all the games. This has been an annual happening for the past 10 years.
This past year Go-Getters helped out with serving refreshments for the dances that are held at the Senior Citizen’s Center before the flood and then at the Oakview Grange. The money we have earned will be used toward the purchase of an item that will benefit people of Lewis County.
The main focus of the 4-H group has been to learn responsibility and promote the educational advantages that are available through the program. We always start our meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag followed by the 4-H Pledge. We have a full slate of officers and our meetings are run according to Robert’s Rules of Order. The President calls the meeting to order and conducts the meeting in an orderly manner. During the meeting the business of the club is discussed and decisions are made about what projects we will do as a club.
Each member can decide what projects s/he wants. Also, members have the option of whether or not we want to complete a record book of our yearly activities.

River Riders is a 4-H horse club out of the Toledo/Winlock area of SW Washington. Our group is a large group of kids ranging in ages from elementary to high school. We are a horse group and most of our members do the gaming events around this area as well as attend youth fair and the county fair. We really rely on each other for support at all events and meetings.
Our club leader has extensive knowledge of horses, training and maintenance. He readily gives information to us and gives us things to research and read. We have an activity leader who helps us put together our 4-H project books for fair. Our resource leader puts together our fund raising events, for example, we made holiday door swags and sold them to people in the community. The money we raise from our fund raising goes towards paying for fair, any expenses we have as a club and this year, with the flood that occurred, we were able to donate some of our funds to the local feed store, Prairie Ridge, for folks who needed a helping hand. The horse project leader sets up things for us to practice in regards to communication between us, and our horses. We also do community projects through out the year. These are all very important pieces to our group.
We ride in the local Egg Days parade, as well as the Toledo Cheese Days parade. We have won awards in both of these parades. Above all, we have fun and enjoy each other’s company. This is a great group to be in.
Club: Stix n Hix
Projects: Equine, Swine
Geographical Area: Mossyrock-Onalaska
Leader: Robin Lian
Phone: 360-983-3114
Stix~N~Hix 4-H club was started Oct 2007. We are Primarily a Horse club but we are open to other projects as well. We currently have 5 horse members, 1 poultry, 1 cavy and 1 horseless. Some of our members are also entered in Photography. We have kids from Mossyrock to Onalaska.
The main goal of our club is to have fun, make new friends and learn. Our kid’s goals were to earn money from fundraising events such as raking leaves, running a concession stand, making items to sell at local bazaars, and doing car washes. With this money they donated to the flood relief fund, paid for fair, bought Holiday dinners to donate back to the community for families in need.
Our kids are also active in doing community service such as: Working at Happ’s doing clean up on helper days and picking up litter along the highway.
We have great Parents, Leaders, and many knowledgeable people willing help teach our kids new skills and expand their minds.
Club Leaders include: Robyn Lian, Brenda DowLearn, Hiedi Garrow, Sue Johnson, and Maureen Harkcom.
